Picture of the week: Round Hay Bales in South Dakota

This picture comes from Roberts County, South Dakota where farmers are currently busy combining soybeans. Hayland covers the third most acres out of all U.S. crops behind corn and soybeans. Many areas of the Corn Belt are able to produce such high yielding corn and soybeans, that farmers do not allocate any land for hay, but in South Dakota livestock is prevalent and hay is grown and harvested in any uncropped area. Even highway ditches are harvested for hay because of the high demand driven by the large livestock numbers.

Remember, we are always looking for agricultural pictures from anywhere in the world. Submit pictures to farmlandforecast@colvin-co.com.
