Picture of the week: Winter Wheat Harvest in Wisconsin
This picture was taken last week in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin where winter wheat harvest is progressing well on the Pabst Farms. The byproduct of wheat is straw, which is the stalk of the wheat plant. If the straw is bailed up during harvest, farmers will need to apply more fertilizer for the next year compared to tilling the plant residue back into the soil to break down and recycle the stalk nutrition naturally.
