Picture of the week: Nitrogen Being Applied

This picture was taken a few weeks ago from Olmsted County, Minnesota. Nitrogen is the most important fertilizer for corn crops and this farmer is applying it in the form of anhydrous ammonia gas. This form of nitrogen will seep into the soil quickly and will be readily available for this year’s corn crop. The 2011 corn crop has been behind the historical average pace, but as of May 30th, 66% of the corn crop has already emerged.
