Picture of the week: Spring Thaw in Wisconsin

This picture comes from southern Wisconsin where the snow is almost totally melted. Although this field is minimum tilled, meaning the soil is not completely upturned each offseason, many fields across the Corn Belt are black in color. Farmers till up their soil because black ground will warm up faster in spring. Warm soil will melt snow faster and dry out quickly so planters are able to start planting in mid-April.

Remember, we are always looking for more agricultural pictures from anywhere in the world. Submit pictures to farmlandforecast@colvin-co.com.
