Picture of the week: Global Crop Yields
This map displays an interesting comparison of all crop production yields across the world. Notice the top production areas in the U.S., Europe, and Indonesia. Also, notice the areas with low production yields; most are developing countries. Through improved technology and infrastructure, many developing countries will increase yields, but soil types will still limit production. The best soil type for growing crops, mollisols, are present in only a few regions of the world and those regions will forever have higher yield potential. Read our article, “U.S. Farmland Best Investment,” for more information on global soil types.
