Picture of the week: A Rare Stockpile of Corn

This picture, taken in October 2010, is from White Rock, South Dakota. Recently grain markets have been very bullish due to the January USDA WASDE Report which revealed the lowest ending U.S. corn stocks since 1995. This past harvest turned out to be perfect for farmers in certain regions that did not receive excess rainfall. Strong yields and high commodity prices benefited the operator of this corn pile. At times, grain bins may be full and farmers are forced to pile grain outside because they cannot hall their grain fast enough to the elevator, as was the case in this picture.
