Picture of the week: Farmland in Salisbury, England
This picture comes from just outside Salisbury, England, and was submitted by Marlene. England has a very rich and historic agriculture sector. In this picture you can see cropland in the foreground and pasture in the valley behind. England’s agriculture sector is responsible for providing 60% of the country’s food needs, while requiring work from only 2% of the population. Major crops grown in the country include wheat, barley, oats, potatoes, and sugar beets while beef cattle and sheep roam the pastures. Wheat is the most widespread crop in the country, covering about 2 million hectares each year, producing roughly 16 million tons of grain, according to Living Countryside.
