Corn, Soy Harvest Winding Down
(DTN) -- Only 4 percent of the nation's soybean crop remains in the fields and 9 percent of the corn is left to be harvested, according to USDA's Weekly Crop Progress report released Monday.
For the week ended Oct. 31, 96 percent of soybeans were in the bin, compared to 50 percent last year and a five-year average of 79 percent.
"Nebraska and North Dakota are at 100 percent, while most other states are only a few percentage points from wrapping a bow around the 2010 crop year," said DTN Analyst John Sanow. "This report should be considered neutral as this week's number will come as no surprise to anyone."
Ninety-one percent of the corn was harvested, compared to 24 percent last year and a five-year average of 61 percent. "This report should be considered neutral as traders expected harvest to be largely done in the next week," Sanow said.
Winter wheat emergence is right on track with the five-year average at 73 percent. Last year at this time, 65 percent of the crop was emerged.
Winter wheat condition was rated 4 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 40 percent good and 6 percent excellent.
"The DTN Condition Index declined 6 index points to 116, keeping it well below last year's 160 points," Sanow said. "The rating is much lower than last year due to dry conditions, but there is virtually no correlation between fall ratings and final yield.
"However, this report may be looked upon as slightly bullish by some traders due to the decline from last week and a DTN Ag Weather forecast that shows little precipitation over the Plains in the next seven to 10 days."
