Picture of the week: Herbicide Use in South Dakota

This picture comes from just outside of New Effington, South Dakota. This corn field exemplifies how powerful the herbicide glyphosate can be. Glyphosate, often sold under the Monsanto brand Roundup, is a powerful herbicide that kills a very wide spectrum of weeds. Farmers consider any type of plant growth in a field to be a weed, other than the specified crop that was planted. Often glyphosate is sprayed once or even twice throughout the growing season. This picture shows how careful farmers must be when they apply their herbicide because it can drift out of a field very easily. For South Dakota, where the wind is almost always blowing, this farmer has done a good job controlling their spray.

Remember, we are always looking for more agricultural pictures from anywhere in the world. Submit pictures to farmlandforecast@colvin-co.com.
