Picture of the week: Wind turbines in northern Iowa
This picture comes from Worth County, Iowa. In the distance, Barton Windmill Project can be seen. North central Iowa recently has been hit with rain, preventing many farmers from getting into their fields at the start of planting season. Most fields have been worked, and are waiting for a few dry days for planters to start doing their job.
Wind energy is another source of income on many farm fields across the Midwest. A single turbine will rewards its landlord with annual payments of up to $15,000. A turbine needs roughly 160 acres. To learn more about wind energy and farmland, read Farmland Forecast’s article on Understanding Renewable Energy: http://farmlandforecast.colvin-co.com/2009/11/19/understanding-renewable-energy-wind-energy.aspx.

What a blight to the landscape!
Who cares about payments to the landowner if you are NOT the landowner but have to live next to these god-awful things!!!! Ruins the formerly beautiful Iowa landscape FOREVER!!
Ban these stupid things!!

I've thought about adding a wind turbine to my farm. I think that they pay for themselves after a while. With the government incentives, this could be a good thing. Has anyone had success with them?

@Raven Cruizer Those "government incentives" are coming out of OUR pockets.
