Picture of the week: Frozen oranges in Florida

This picture comes from the Florida Department of State. Florida was recently hit with an uncommon frost that caused cornern for Florida fruit farmers. This picture shows one of the many ways to prevent frost damage in crops. When water is sprayed on orange trees prior to a frost, it will freeze. When water freezes it releases heat, and usually it is enough to prevent frost damage in the fruit. The ice will act as an insulator during a short freeze as well. Due to the recent frost in Florida, farmers will see at least a 30% crop loss, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services.
