Picture of the week: No till farming practice in Wisconsin
This picture comes from Wisconsin back in spring. Besides the sprayer in this picture, notice that this field has not been plowed. Farmers may choose not to plow under a field after the fall harvest or in spring before they plant, if they practice no till farming. No till farming has many benefits relating to offsetting carbon in soil. Here is a short explanation of no till farming from Ohio State University:
In no-till agriculture, farmers plant seeds without using a plow to turn the soil. Soil loses most of its carbon content during plowing, which releases carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere. Increased levels of CO2 in the atmosphere have been associated with global climate change.
