Virginia loosing farmland at an alarming rate
Virginia is losing farmland very fast. 5.2 acres are converted every minute according to Augusta County, VA. Conservationists are trying to conserve as much land as possible and they have been able to permanently protect more than 2,000 acres in a two county area in Virginia through easements and conservation programs.
While grain prices were at all time highs last year, so were input costs for Virginia farmers. The profit margin was mediocre last year, while it is dismal this year. Virginia farmers are opting to sell their farms instead of continually playing the input and output markets of farming.
